On September 1, 2004, at approximately 9 a.m. local time, a group of approximately 32 heavily armed Chechen rebels attacked School Number 1 in Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia, taking 1,200 children and adults hostage. The siege came to a bloody end 3 days later when Russian special ops and civilian militia groups attacked the terrorists following a series of mysterious explosions.
