During the night of 1-2 February 1959, 9 experienced Soviet hikers cut themselves out of their tent, seemingly in a panic, and headed out into the sub-zero night underprepared, poorly dressed, some without boots on. Their bodies were discovered many weeks later bearing gruesome unexplained injuries including fractured skulls and missing eyes.
